Depression or what to do when all is lost!

Depression may cause you to feel like "all is lost" when you loose some abilities due to your stroke. All you have left is to mourn the loss of the use of a leg, arm, speech, spelling or a combination of them all.

When this happens your world is shattered and your ability to communicate with the rest of the world is terribly impaired. It's a frighting and isolating feeling leaving you panicking in your mind about how you're going to live the rest of your life.

Dark depressing thoughts are lurking all around you and it would be so easy to give in to them. It's a mental state and more importantly a choice. A choice you can say yes or no to. It's really that simple.

Just say yes to it and your life is not over. It will continue on despite your being no help to yourself. You can look forward to endless amounts of days feeling sorry for yourself.

Your body soldiers on waiting for help you're not giving it.

Say no and you have something you can work on and work with. I know because “Just say no to Depression” was my motto. No thanks I'd rather get better. I may have not known how at first but I was willing to try anything.

There are Stroke Researchers working on solving questions about recovery everyday and coming up with new thinking and therapies. What we knew about stroke recovery 5, 10, 15 even 20 years ago is stone age compared to what we know these days.

I remember thinking and doing things during my recovery that were contrary to common thinking and doing with stroke survivors. I did them anyway and it turns out years later research proves what I did was effective. All I can say is “Yes it was, I'm living proof on it”.

Time and time again I've told Stroke Survivors and Caregivers “stroke is not a punishment but a challenge”. Take it as a challenge and you have something to work on and gauge your progress. Seeing progress is a very uplifting experience. When you see yourself getting better and your caregivers see it too everyone smiles more and gets energized. It changes your world for the better.

So what will it be? Depression which takes no work at all and leaves you with that hopeless, life is over feeling that goes on and on. Or do you take up the challenge that gives everyone involved hope.

Yes it's a lot of work but what else were you doing?

One more thing to keep in mind. A stroke just doesn't effect the survivor it effects everyone around them. Your attitude becomes their attitude. So do you want your loved ones; wife, husband or children to be depressed or uplifted by your taking up the challenge of getting better? It's your choice so be careful it means a lot to more than just you!
